Challenging Paradigms: My SEATINI Uganda’s Equator School for Alternative Development Experience

My name is Paul Kyeyune. My journey as a graduate trainee at SEATINI Uganda, under the Equator School for Alternative Development Model, has been nothing short of transformative. This opportunity has not only refined my professional skills but also profoundly shaped my worldview, allowing me to actively challenge the entrenched neoliberal paradigm.

Immersed in the dynamic spheres of trade, debt, aid, and socioeconomic justice, I have found a fertile ground for growth and contribution. This experience has offered me a rare chance to learn, unlearn, and relearn. Each engagement has been a step toward understanding the intricate layers of social justice and economic equity, especially for marginalized communities.

One of the most impactful aspects of my role has been advocating for the interests of marginalized groups, particularly women. Through comprehensive debates, meticulous research, advocacy campaigns, and the development of policy briefs, I have had the privilege to influence processes that promote equitable access to markets and resources. These efforts are not just professional duties but are deeply personal missions that resonate with my commitment to fostering social justice for all.

The program has also honed my critical thinking abilities, pushing me to develop nuanced analyses and propose innovative alternatives that prioritize sustainability and equality. Challenging the neoliberal status quo is no small feat, but the support and guidance I have received at SEATINI have empowered me to question and confront these pervasive economic structures.

Engaging with a diverse array of stakeholders in consultative meetings has been particularly enriching. These interactions have broadened my understanding and provided me with invaluable insights into the multifaceted nature of social and economic processes. Moreover, leading the creation of knowledge materials—such as policy briefs, concept notes, and issue papers—has significantly improved my writing and analytical skills. These documents not only support our advocacy efforts but also serve as crucial tools for driving systemic change.

This journey has been a blend of professional development and personal enlightenment. Each day at SEATINI is a testament to the power of dedicated effort and the profound impact of collaborative action. As I continue to navigate this path, I am more committed than ever to advocating for socioeconomic justice and ensuring that the voices of the marginalized are not just heard but amplified.
