Climate and Trade Cooperation for Climate-Resilient Development
This side event, co-organized by the Southern and Eastern Africa Trade Information and Negotiations Institute (SEATINI), the Forum on Trade, Environment & the SDGs (TESS), and the German Institute for Development & Sustainability (IDOS), will consider how the Mutirão dialogue on climate change and trade can catalyze new incentives, opportunities and innovative approaches that enable trade systems to work constructively in tandem with climate and development priorities.
Objective and Questions for Discussion
The 2026 Bonn Climate Meetings will host the first Mutirão Dialogue on climate change and trade offering a multilateral setting for governments, institutions and stakeholders from the climate and trade communities to explore “opportunities, challenges and barriers in relation to enhancing international cooperation related to the role of trade” in addressing climate change.
This side event will bring together experts from civil society and academia to highlight concrete experiences, policy innovations, and cooperation pathways to illustrate how trade can be shaped and governed to support climate ambition and climate‑resilient development
It will focus on the following questions:
- In what ways could the COP30 Mutirão Decision open the door to deeper trade cooperation—whether through regulatory innovation, capacity‑building, or investment and value chains partnerships—that strengthen the ability of countries to meet their climate and sustainable development goals?
- Looking ahead, what types of international cooperation hold the greatest potential for trade policy to unlock climate and development benefits and can be prioritized in the Mutirão dialogue process?
