The Nexus between Tax Justice and Investment Governance in Africa

Online Webinar
This event will take place at 8-9:30am EST/ 12-1:30pm GMT/ 3-4:30pm EAT. Registration is free but required. Please register here.

CCSI, Tax Justice Network Africa (TJN-A), and SEATINI-Uganda will host a webinar to discuss tax justice and investment governance.

Tax and investment frameworks interact in a variety of complex ways. While taxation measures are crucial for achieving sustainable development outcomes, the ability of states to design and implement effective and progressive tax measures can be constrained by investor protections enshrined in investment treaties. Investor claims can seek to rely on treaties to lock in fiscal incentives, challenge government efforts to collect taxes, and generally make tax administration and collection more challenging.

To facilitate a conversation of these issues in the context of ongoing policy developments, TJN-A and CCSI are convening a webinar to:

Increase stakeholder appreciation and understanding of the links between tax justice and investment governance.
Provide a platform for engagement between civil society organizations that work on tax and investment.
Strengthen understanding of the key issues in ongoing tax and investment policymaking processes, particularly at the African Union level.
Identify policy options that can inform negotiations on tax and investment issues.
Speakers:
Everlyn Kavenge, Policy Assistant, Tax and Investment, TJN-A
Africa Kiiza, Consulting Research Fellow, CCSI
Brendah Akankunda, Executive Director, SEATINI-Uganda
Claire Provost, Investigative Journalist, Author of the report “Taxes on trial: How trade deals threaten tax justice?”
Stefano Prato, Managing Director, Society for International Development (SID) (invited)
Representative from The South Centre

CCSI’s co-organization of this event is supported by GIZ on behalf of the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ); however, the views expressed do not necessarily reflect the German government’s official views or policies.
