SEATINI and CEFROHT Hold Legal Experts Meeting to Analyze Uganda’s Investment legal Framework

On 26th April 2021, SEATINI-Uganda and CEFROHT with financial support from The Open Society Initiative for Eastern Africa (OSIEA) organized a legal experts meeting mainly to discuss the draft pleadings to be filed before the court for the addition of OPUL and amendment of the pleadings in the case.

As part of the Litigation process, SEATINI organized this Legal Experts meeting to discuss on the prospects of the case and foster a way forward on how the human rights abusers can be brought before the law but also to advance for the reviewing of the investment code to incorporate the provision of Human rights impact assessment.

This meeting brought light the fact that Government is the primary duty bearer and thus is the right party to sue where there is a human rights violation as it is mandated to protect and defend every citizen’s rights.

The current National Investment Code 2019 is the guiding legal framework in the investment related aspects. It provides for several regulations and principles that govern the investments and investors. However, the investment Code does not provide for the protection of Human rights which is very fundamental as life should be put first Before Profit.
It is upon this background that SEATINI is running a campaign dubbed ‘LIFE BEFORE PROFITS’ and under this campaign, SEATINI together with CEFROHT has brought a case under public interest litigation on behalf of the workers whose rights have been violated under the investment schemes.

Food security is also a question of resilience.

Across East Africa, farmers are facing a difficult combination of declining soil fertility, rising production costs and increasingly erratic weather — pressures that threaten agricultural production and livelihoods.
