Webinar on Gender Transformative Social Protection Financing for Women and Girls’ Economic Empowerment

Social Protection stands as a crucial element in fostering sustained, inclusive, and sustainable economic growth globally. However, despite its importance, the coverage and effectiveness of social protection systems, particularly concerning women and girls, remain inadequate. Gender disparities persist in access to social protection, with women being disproportionately affected. As a result, achieving gender equality in key areas such as poverty eradication and economic empowerment necessitates urgent action.

Problem Statement: Current trends indicate a significant gap in financing gender-transformative social protection systems. The persistent underfunding of such initiatives, compounded by broader economic challenges like debt and climate crises, hampers progress. African countries, in particular, face significant hurdles in revenue generation and public investment management, leading to escalating debt burdens and limited fiscal space for critical sectors.

Objectives of the Session: The webinar aims to explore the interplay between domestic revenue mobilization, social protection financing, and gender equality. Key objectives include:

• Assessing the impact of austerity measures on social protection financing.
• Exploring the role of social protection financing in advancing gender equality and economic empowerment for women and girls.
• Evaluating the potential contribution of existing social protection systems to women’s and girls’ economic empowerment.
• Analyzing the implications of various social protection financing options on gender inequalities, particularly in developing countries, with a focus on Africa.
